Why Big Blue
Welcome to B-State
Bluefield State University achieves its mission by offering education that emphasizes learning and creating opportunities for social mobility. Our students receive personalized attention (our student-to-faculty ratio is 13:1) and instruction from faculty members who are invested in their future. The University offers programs in fields such as business, education, nursing, and engineering as well as humanities and social sciences. Roughly 50 percent of our students enter a STEM discipline within allied health or engineering technology that prepares them for fulfilling, financially rewarding careers that are in high demand.
Bluefield State is one of two HBCUs in West Virginia and is one of the fastest growing HBCUs in the country. The University is situated in the terraced hills of Bluefield, WV, a small city known for its friendly, welcoming community. Southern West Virginia's gateway offers a variety of attractive and enjoyable recreational activities, such as exploring nature at Pinnacle Rock State Park, embarking on off-road adventures at the Hatfield McCoy ATV trails or watching a film at the Historic Granada Theater in downtown Bluefield.
Our student population is becoming increasingly diverse, with representation
than 10 countries and 30 states. The B-State student body is a mosaic of individuals from distinct
cultural and socio-economic backgrounds. Student life is vibrant and provides meaningful extracurricular
activities, leadership development, and learning opportunities beyond the classroom that create a
holistic student experience.
